After years of fighting for equality in America we have still yet to be equal. We know why certain things are unequal but I have yet to find someone who knows the answer to my question. Inequality still exists in the workplace because of sex, race, and education. One of the biggest pay gaps in the workplace is sex. Between women and men the pay gap is different, men get paid more than women that are in the same profession. As a woman I honestly donâ₠¬â„¢t believe that it is fair because if I’m just as eligible as a non pregnant woman, or a man in my office even though the company is MAKING me take leave. You already having to give me paid leave, so why not give me my bonus too so when I come back I have it instead of me feeling as I’m getting discriminated against. Believe it or not there is a pay gap in-between a group of women itself. The pay gap worsens with age, the pay gap is 6% for women aged 25 to 35 but in women 60 and over the gap becomes a huge 38%. In 2013, women ages 55 to 64 years had median weekly earnings of $788. While the earnings for women in this age, group are higher than for women in other age groups, they are $212 less per week than the median weekly earnings of men ages 55 to 64 years, which is $1,000 per week for a gender earnings ratio of 78.8 percent. Managers Role in assessing the effectiveness of the above-mentioned concepts: A manager of any organization in his pursuit of making the business of the company more and more successful should need to take care of all the means that can help in creating customer satisfaction and enhancing the same. Being a manager of an establishment, as for instance, a hotel that serves towards the lodging of the visitors, he or she should be well prepared by setting forth all the facilities that can create and enrich all the possible experiences of the inmates during their stay (Mok et al. 2013). In order to satisfy the above-mentioned purpose, the manager at the first and foremost stance should make sure about the well-defined presence of the departments of the hospitality management in the hotel, so that the inmates of the venue do not feel any kind of discomfort and unsatisfactory service on their part. Through the proper implementation of the service profit chain the manager of an establishment is able to receive the best and productive services from the employees (Chen et al. 2013). Now, if the employees are provided with those privileges that they deserve then they will be able to serve the customers in terms of hospitality more and more better. If the manager after the implementation of the service-profit chain does not get the desired results in terms of customer experience and customer loyalty and satisfaction, then he should be more alert in assessing the experiences that the customers receive after entering his establishment (Lee, 2016). Therefore, he should set another small department of a few officials who will design the experiences that the customers should undergo during the process of enjoying the products or services of the particular concern. On the other hand, the assessment of the employee productivity needs to be one. If the manager feels that the customers are happy with the experiences that they receive from their establishment or organization, he should increase the employee management schemes, he can then set up another department that will take care of the issues related to the employee productivity and satisfaction and enrich the same through various training and proper recruitment processes. Now, if the manager finds that the enhancement of the employee productivity and loyalty have successfully led to the progress in the hospitality management department of the concern , thereby securing a good reputation among the consumers by gaining their loyalty and trust through the creation of experiences and reliable services. Conclusion: Thus, it is evident that the hospitality management constitutes one of the most vital departments of an organization from almost all perspectives that are required for the growth of the firm. Answer: Introduction In nearly all aspects of life, communication has proven to be momentous as a conduit to success and happiness (Shrivastava, 2012). The quality of an organizations internal communication can say a lot about business. This means that if an organization is characterized by poor communication, then the organization is likely to fall. Effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills are significant in any workplace. Many organization spent a lot in training their employees in effective communication (Hol, 2012). My thinking about business communication has evolved since I am able to denote that effective communication skills go beyond conversation, but it is important that those in business should know how to communicate in written reports. This paper focuses on the issues and the significance related to communication, especially in the workplace. Describe an experience or critical incident you have experienced or witnessed in a work- based setting, involving an aspect of poor communication. You may draw on experiences you have had as an employee, as a customer or simply as an observer of organisational life. How did you feel about the incident? Given your insights from the subjects learning materials why was the communication so poor and how could it have been improved? One major experience about poor communication in an organization was during my holiday where I volunteered as part of a project management team in a construction company. I witness a manager who came up with new plans and asked the architectural team to design a structural model that would attract large customers. The plan was devoid of any consultation with the concerned departments. After few weeks, the manager realized the project was not financially viable and canceled the plan while still underway. The manager used a subordinate to communicate the message to the architects who were working on the project. With an adequate knowledge of communication, this incident made me feel frustrated as I would see the confusion that the receivers of the message portrayed. The communication was poor because of the ambiguity. The manager did not give any reasons whatsoever why the project had to be canceled. Besides, the project did not have clear goals it had come from the manger without going through the proper channels which could have helped in formulating goals. Listening is a very important virtue in communication skills (Dutta, 2013). The use of a subordinate to communicate such as a momentous information was a poor sign of communication. This is because the team would have a hard time to believe whether the communication is authentic since it is not a formal way of communication. The communication was poor because the manager did not consult any department so as to have an overview of what to expect from the project. The canceling of the project due to poor communication led to a wastage of resources and employees valuable time. The communication could have been improved by the manager consulting different departments on his project. This could have helped to have an expert analysis the viability of the project. The use of formal means of communication would have helped. The employees needed a letter to inform them that the project has been canceled so as to avoid confusion. Leaders should create a favorable and open environment that will encourage the employees to air their views (Sehgal, 2008). Week 3 Relevance to business How does dialogic communication differ from what you have experienced in the past, for example in previous or current workplaces, university, social life, your home country, etc.? Drawing from the subjects learning materials, reflect on why it may be important to promote dialogue in an organisational context from a business perspective. Globalization has made the business and social environment to consist of people with different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. For this reason, communication becomes an extremely important aspect that can enable people to understand each other better without any party feeling assumed. Dialogic communication is a theory that was developed so as to ensure that an environment that exists where peoples perspectives are considered during communication (Eremeeva, and Baranova, 2016). Dialogic communication is a combination of two words, dialogue, and logic. This implies that it is a communication that involves two or more parties. Consequently, it also means that it is a communication that is inclusive of logic. This means that during communication one must think clearly what one is talking about. Dialogic communication is a communication that is considerate of the party feelings and how the communication would affect another party. However, the fact that Dialogic communication is important in the way people interact with others, it is not practiced in day to day communication (Paula Matos, and Esposito, 2014). Case in point, in my experience in the workplace, employees are usually selfish, and they would not like their fellow employees to be accorded special treatment even if it is regarding communication. An employee who comes from an Arab country would not be spared with any filter of words as fellow employees can suggest that people from the background of such an employee are extremists. In the social context, dialogic communication holds no importance as people are not aware how much communication is important to people. Very few individual in the social sphere are aware the importance of considering the point of view of a receiver of a message Managing todays diversity in business remains a challenge to many organizations (Dwyer, 2012). Since there is increasingly international labor markets, organizations are now faced with the problem of having a growing number of multicultural teams (Gibson, 2002). Organizations work in teams to ensure that the desired outcomes are achieved. However, the deep cultural and human differences that constitute the makeup of teams in an organization, need an effective communication mechanism such as dialogic communication. With dialogic communication, it is possible for members of an organization to acknowledge that both the speaker and listener have different point of views and that it is imperative to engage in a logical discussion to reach an equilibrium. When logic is applied in communication among members of an organization, differences in age, cultural, ethnicity, educational background and marital status become a normal thing which will help in improvement of a performance of an organi zation. How can these insights inform the way you communicate with people from different cultures in the future? Intercultural communication is important in todays globalized environment. It is a culture that anyone in the business sector needs to learn since business activities have shifted to operate from country to country (Griffith, and Harvey, 2001). From the insights, I have been able to gain a lot regarding developing my skills in intercultural communication. I have been able to respect peoples way of doing things because different countries have different cultures. This has helped in breaking the assumption that I had regarding different communities. I also learned that the use of technology in communicating with people from different cultures is imperative since technology create a sense of unity. Though cultures can never be the same, it is important to ensure that people are treated equality at the workplace regales of ones culture (Morrison, 2008). For instance, promotion and delegation of tasks should be fair regardless of ones culture. I learned that maturity is important when com municating with people of different cultures in the workplace. Maturity in communication is important as one can analyze one body languages and also nonverbal cues when communicating with people. These insights have helped me ensuring that I get rid of insensitive behavior when communicating with people from different cultures in future. The insensitive behavior ranges from language and also use some nonverbal cues that might have a negative effect on an individual with a different culture from mine. The insights have ensured that am equipped with the knowledge of empathizing with individuals from different cultures during communication in future. This means it is important that I put myself in the position of the people of other cultures while communicating and try to think in their way. When has the knowledge of another culture in mind, it is easy for a person to be able to make comparisons and also identify the things can create a discourse during communication. Consequently, when one puts oneself in the shoes of another person, it is possible to understand and know where to change especially in communication. Conclusion In conclusion, communication in the workplace ranges from verbal and non-verbal exchange such through emails and text messages. To establish a strong business relationship, it is important to ensure that proper communication practices are established. Good relationship among members of an organization will assist in improving work output of the employees whereas poor communication will lead to poor relationship thus poor work out put. The one in the window grew the 2nd best, and the ones under the green light and in total darkness died. Conclusion: My hypothesis was incorrect. The plant under the red light grew better than the one under the normal sunlight. 1. No, the data did not support the researchers hypothesis because the researcher guessed that the window plant would grow better but it didnt. 2. It was important to record each seedlings initial height because then you know for sure which one grew the most. 3. It is important for each seedling to get the same amount of water because then you would have 2 variables. A project should only have 1 variable. 4. Impact of Environment on Child Development Free Online Research Papers In my report I’m going to touch on several topics pertaining to how genetic, environment, and what parents teach the child effects the development of the child. I also will discuss my views on parenting styles. I will discuss the consequences of parents working. I feel that the benefits of both parents working are not worth the consequences. If both parents most work their should be at least one home with the kids when they get in from school. In my opinion efforts to accelerate early development doesn’t work. If anything it slows down the process. Each child is different and will learn and do things on their own time. I never used a walker for my children because I felt they were to dangerous. I have seen babies fall off of porches and pull things down onto themselves. Without a walker or any extra encouragement my son walked at 10 months. As for my daughter she toke her time crawling, walking, and talking. With her the more we pushed the longer it toke her. Once we allowed her to do on her own we couldn’t stop her from talking or get her to sit still. Just like with anything else it is a mind thing. Once they get it in their heads to do it then and only then, they will walk. My advise for new parents is don’t waste your money on a walker. The interaction of genetic and environment do influence the development of a child. In my experience with raising a child that was not raised by their mother or father and they still have similar habits. I am raising three of my sister children and they all have some of her ways, even though she never really raised them. For example her oldest daughter, by the way she never raised her but they act just alike. That is were I feel her environment comes into play. You see my grandparents raised them both so I figure it must have something to do with how my grandparents choose to discipline them. Because my grandparents are what we call upper middle class. So they had the best of everything. Even so, the children still choose to be wild and crazy. Unlike me, who was raised by my mother along with three brothers and did not get the best of everything I chose a different path. Just like myself, my sister’s other three daughters were raised by my mother, and they are total opposite of their older sister. Now, don’t get me wrong, they still have some of their mothers ways. They just are not as bad as their sister. My sister’s father family has a history of depression, so that gene was past down to my sister who passed it on to her daughter. I’m sure that one of the ones I have my have it too, but it just has not presented itself yet. Taking this class and learning about the interaction of genetics and environment has only further my belief in this theory. A child is a product of their environment too. Children that I know who parents fight each other or other people are in more fights themselves then a child that is not exposed to such violence. I don’t believe that violence on television is the reason for children being so violent. We as parents are our children first influence. So what we do around them will determine what they do. Which brings me to my next issue. I feel that parents should be the ones teaching their children life values not the teacher or latest super star. If you start when they are young teaching them about respect. Once the child is old enough to talk and understand right from wrong is when you should start teaching them and working on building self-esteem. In this world today a child is never to young to learn the truth about the world. If we do not teach them before someone else does they my end up being miss lead. Parents that depend on others to teach their children the important things in life are setting them up for failure. We must start at home teaching them about sex, loving others, and not to hate people or bring them harm. We must show them love at home so they don’t go out looking for it in the streets. Even though kids will still do what they want if you teach them right from wrong then they will not stray far. Especially these days when so many children are raising children. I feel that this is an affect of parents working and also being single parents. Which causes parents to have to work to provide for their kids on their own. Which in turn leaves the children raising themselves because there is no one home to teach them. That is when children are easily miss lead and to do things that are not right. So even though some parents my have to work, they need to still take out the time to be there for their children to teach and love them. I believe that parenting styles and temperaments go hand in hand. The reason I feel this way is because parents that were to hard on their children grow up get out from their parents and rebel. Parents that are not so hard or not so easy either, children grow up to be good people. And those parents that were to easy on their children turned out to some of the worst kids you come across. For example my aunt is what we call an authoritarian and both of her children started rebelling in their teenage years. Right now, she has a teenage son that is giving her problems and her daughter did the same around the same age. Now my mother on the other hand was totally opposite and she never had any problems out of me. I never ran away like my cousins and I completed High School on time. My mother taught me when I was young so once I became a teenager she let me make my own chooses in certain situations. I feel her style of raising us was pretty good for the most part because I feel I t urned out just fine. It toke my cousin going away to college and away from her mother, to settle down and make something of her self so she would not have to depend on them anymore. Even now with my cousin, being on her own and has a child of her own, her mother is still that way with her. I think that being that way does not build a health and open relationship between parents and their children. When you don’t allow them to express their feelings then that is how we end up with kids shooting up schools. Parents must start treating children like they have brains and be open to them to talk to them about things that go on in their lives without fear of repercussion. Instead of telling teens not to have sex, educate them and let them know that you are always their for them when it comes down to them thinking about having sex. That would be a start at trying to cut down on teen pregnancy. So in the end parents are really the ones that determine what kind of person their kids turn out to be. In my report I talked about several topics that I feel are all linked together. The link of them all is the parents part in children development. The parents genetics, what parenting styles they choose, and where they choose to live all play a part in a child’s development. I also talked about the effects that parents working have on their children. Temperaments of a child are effected by the parenting styles that parents choose to use. I also touch on the acceleration efforts used to speed up development such as walkers. They do not help the process, but slow it down if anything. Parents must be positive and first influences on a child. Parents can’t expect for the schools, teachers, or preachers to be the ones to teach their children. And being too hard on your children can have a negative affect on how they act as teens. Parents most be more open and honest with their children these days, because there are so many other elements out there to teach your c hildren the wrong things. Basically I chose topics that I felt that I could relate to since I am a parent myself and come from such a big family where so many of us act a lot alike. The Maccabean war of independence, fought through to 139 BCE, wasnt just about foreign rule, but also about those Jews embracing Hellenism, a civil war, as it were, between Orthodox and Hellenistic Judaism. Hellenic Judaism was the fusing and harmonization of Greek philosophy and Judaism, where the practices of both Jewish exegesis and Stoic philosophy were followed. Those propagating this Hellenistic Philosophy included the Jewish philosopher Philoi of Alexandria (20 BCE 50 CE ). Hellenistic Philosophy, as espoused by Philo, was enthusiastically received by the early Gentile Christians, some of whom saw him as a cryptic Christian. Some today believe his concept of the Logosii as Gods creative principle influenced early Christology.iii Mainstream Judaism rejecting Hellenistic currents eventually (at the Council of Jamnia in 90 CE) prohibited the use of the Septuagintiv, leaving the Masoreticv as the only authoritative Hebrew text of the Jewish Bible. Antecedent to this, the Apostolic Decree of circa 48 CE (Acts 15) allowing converts to forgo circumcision made Christianity a more attractive option for interested Pagans than Pharisaic/Rabbinic Judaism which, in response to this quickly-growing Netzarim Judaism, instituted an even more stringent circumcision procedure in response. Hellenistic Judaism continue in existence until Constantine adopted Christianity as the official State religion. Remaining currents of Hellenistic Judaism in all probability, as would be expected, merged into gnostic movements in the early centuries CE. The Hellenization of Christianity was a complex interaction between Hellenistic philosophy and early Christianity during the first four centuries of the Common Era. The initial conflict between these two modes of thought is recorded in scripture; in Pauls encounters with Epicurean and Stoic philosophers in Acts 17:18, his diatribe against Greek philosophy in 1st Corinthians 1:18-31, and his warning against philosophy in Colossians 2:8vi. Over time, however, as Christianity spread throughout the Hellenic world, an increasing number of church leaders were educated in Greek philosophy. The dominant philosophical traditions of the Greco-Roman world at the time were Stoicism, Platonism, and Epicureanism. Of these, Stoicism and particularly Platonism were readily incorporated into Christian ethics and theology. Philos blend of Judaism, Platonism, and Stoicismvii strongly influenced Christian Alexandrian writers like Origen and Clement of Alexandria, as well as, in the Latin world, Ambrose of Milan. Clement of Alexandria, early Christian writer of the second and early third century, demonstrated Greek thought in writing: Philosophy has been given to the Greeks as their own kind of Covenant, their foundation for the philosophy of Christ the philosophy of the Greeks contains the basic elements of that genuine and perfect knowledge which is higher than human even upon those spiritual objects. (Miscellanies 6. 8) The Church historian Eusebius, c. 263-339 CE, suggested, essentially, that Greek philosophy had been supplied providentially as a preparation for the Gospel. Augustine of Hippo, who ultimately systematized Christian philosophy, wrote in the 4th and early fifth century: But when I read those books of the Platonists I was taught by them to seek incorporeal truth, so I saw your invisible things, understood by the things that are made. (Confessions 7. 20). This Greek pagan philosophy, now deeply entrenched and mixed within Christian theology, has persisted through the centuries becoming the foundation of Western thought and culture. Many today often blindly view the founding fathers of the United States as purely Christian. One of the most common statements from the Religious Right is that they want this country to; return to the Christian principles on which it was founded. However, even a little research into American history will show that this statement is unfounded and based on a false premise. The men responsible for building the foundation of the United States had little use for Christianity, and many were strongly opposed to it. They were men of The Enlightenment, not men of Christianity. They were Deistsviii who did not believe the bible was inspired truth. Indubitably, the US Constitution is a masterpiece of civil law providing for, among other things, the protection of religious beliefs against Governmental intrusion allowing the free exercise thereof, while at the same time wonderfully preventing the establishment of religious domination via state sanctioned religion. It was the latter of these two concepts that most concerned the signers of the Declaration of Independence and Framers of the Constitution, with but tolerance of the former. They wanted to ensure that no single religion could make the claim of being the official, national religion, such as was the case in England. The cultural climate of the time was one in which freedom from the religious domination of the Church of England and Catholicism was desired by the masses, which provided a perfect habitat for those of the Enlightenment. The 1796 treaty with Tripoli states that the United States was in no sense founded on the Christian religion. This was not an idle statement, meant to satisfy Muslims they believed it and meant it. This treaty was written under the presidency of George Washington and signed under the presidency of John Adams. None of the Founding Fathers were known atheists. Most were Deists, which is to say they thought the universe had a creator, but that he does not concern himself with the daily lives of humans, and does not directly communicate with humans, either by revelation or by sacred books. They spoke often of God, (Natures God or the God of Nature), but this was not the God of the Bible. They did not deny that there was a person called Jesus, and praised him for his benevolent teachings, but they flatly denied his divinity. These Founders of the Constitution were students of the European Enlightenmentix. Thomas Jefferson author of the Declaration of Independence and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, third president of the United States, historian, philosopher, plantation owner, and founder of the University of Virginia voiced the aspirations of a new America as no other individual of his era. He also in his writings voiced his beliefs: As you say of yourself, I too am an Epicurian. I consider the genuine (not the imputed) doctrines of Epicurus as containing everything rational in moral philosophy which Greece and Rome have left us. Epictetus indeed, has given us what was good of the stoics; I take the liberty of observing that you are not a true disciple of our master Epicurus, in indulging the indolence to which you say you are yielding. One of his canons, you know, was that the indulgence which prevents a greater pleasure, or produces a greater pain, is to be avoided. But while this syllabus is meant to place the character of Jesus in its true and high light, as no impostor himself, but a great Reformer of the Hebrew code of religion, it is not to be understood that I am with Him in all His doctrines. I am a Materialist; he takes the side of Spiritualism; he preaches the efficacy of repentance towards forgiveness of sin; Jeffersons letter to William Short, from Monticello August 4, 1820. That being said, it is easy to see that the aforementioned tolerance of religious freedom, was in reality a bulwark for the benefit of The Enlightenment, not the Pious, and in this age that bulwark being no longer necessary is coming to an end. For two-hundred plus years we, in this United States of America, have enjoyed freedom of Religion so that those of the Enlightenment could enjoy their freedom from Religion. But figuratively speaking, the air of tolerance toward Judeo-Christian beliefs is wisping away, leaving the putrid stench of moral corruption and malicious bigotry toward anyone who identifies with Yeshua and the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good, traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof [emphasis  added]: from these also turn away. (2Timothy 3:1-5). Like the parable of the Kingdom of Heaven of Matt 13; at the founding of the United States of America two seeds were sown. Two hundred years later in these last days the two seeds have grown to maturity. And now the tares are fully distinguishable from the wheat. For the American believers there has been a two-hundred year bastion of grace, to grow into the maturity of the Word, and to shine above the philosophies of this world. And now you see, God had afforded us a little more time in these last days to fulfill His purposes. Not waring in the flesh but; pulling down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought into the obedience of Christ (2Cor. 10:5 MKJV) . For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Happiness is essential for one to be sane. Love leads to happiness and this is shown in the novels Water for Elephants by Sarah Gruen and The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill. Characters in both novels try to find happiness through love, but it ultimately leads to despair because of the death or loss of a loved one. Happiness is fulfilled through the form of love. To begin with, Jacob has respect and love for his parents that have been there every step of his life. The Dean of the University calls Jacob into his office and Jacob fears â€Å"Dear Lord- if I get expelled now, my father will kill me. (Gruen 6)† Jacob fears that if he gets expelled from the university, that his father had put much hard work to bring Jacob there, then his father will be dissatisfied with him. Jacob’s fear of dishearten his family is a symbol that he loves his family tremendously. This also represents that his happiness is a link to the happiness of his parents and that their disappointment of him is also a disappointment of himself. Secondly, Marlene loves her husband August greatly, thus bringing her happiness. Jacob asks Marlene how is August like and Marlene replies â€Å"He’s capable of being the most charming man on earth. (95)† Marlene’s family, who are Roman Catholic, has banished her because she marries August, who is Jewish. To Marlene, the love of her family is crucial to her, but now that they create a hole of anguish inside of her, therefore she fills this hole by loving and greatly admiring August. Like the Book of Negroes, Happiness comes through the form of love and this perfectly exemplified in the how Jacob loves his parents because he fears them and Marlene loves August after her family exiles her. However, this changes after her master steals and sells her child, and this is like him stealing Aminata happiness and selling it away. Though happiness is vital to life and it comes in the form of love, it does not always mean that misery will not follow it. This is shown when Jacob loves his parents, but his parents die, Marlene loves August, but he hits her. Also when Aminata falls in love with Chekura, but they are separated and when Aminata’s master sells Aminata’s child.

The three biggest changes caused by the Internet are in communication, sales, and access to information. The Internet has changed the way people communicate. It allows for instant and reliable communication between people across the street or across the globe. In the past, the only ways to send documents were via fax and postal mail. Faxes were limited because messages could only include two-dimensional text and graphics. The postal mail faced these same issues, as well as the problem with the time it took to send a document through the mail. With the Internet, documents with text, graphics, audio files, video files, and interactive objects can now be transmitted quickly to anyone with a simple click of a button. This has changed the way business is done and has made it easier for companies to expand into new markets. On a smaller level, the Internet has allowed people to reconnect with old friends or make new ones. Chat rooms and social networks such as MySpace. com are becoming increasingly popular as people enjoy the sense of anonymity. Customers can now purchase nearly everything they need from the comfort of their own homes. The Internet has also allowed for quick and easy comparisons of the prices and quality of products and services. The final and most important impact of the Internet is in the access of information. In the past, if you needed to find information on the history of Latin America, you had to go to your local library. Then, you were limited by which books and resources the library carried. With limited budgets, libraries cannot be expected to carry the best sources for every topic. Today, you can access information on any topic from the Internet through academic journals, online encyclopedias, book reviews, and more. In addition, you can find information on every television and radio program, historical events, current events, health issues, scientific discoveries, sporting events, and theories on everything from biomedicine to parenting. Finally, being able to access information online has led to colleges and universities offering degrees where it is not necessary for students to ever step into a classroom. Lectures, PowerPoint slides, notes, and required readings are available on the Internet. In conclusion, the Internet has significantly changed the world in the way people communicate, do business, and learn. The rapidity with which these changes took place suggests that more drastic and exciting changes are still to come. New and innovative uses for technology are developed every day, and the Internet is a major focus of these developments.

We produce these cell in order to grow until we reach adulthood. When we reach adulthood, these cells reproduce primarily to heal wounds and to replace the cells that have died.3 When we look at a cancerous cells, we see that it divides endlessly. As the cell divides and multiplies, it takes up more and more of the space that the healthy cells once had to work in. These cells will take up more and more space until they are able to move into new areas of the body or the organism in which they live dies. We do understand that the diseases likeliness to form is heightened with the different environments that people live in. Researchers see that with constant contact with carcinogens, substances that promote the development of cancer, is almost a guarantee that the person will develop cancer at some point in their life. Chemicals, radiation and viruses are the main types of carcinogens. Constant exposure to these carcinogens cause gene abnormalities that can be inherited or induced in a body cell. These cells can also be damaged by outside sources. After many mutations from these carcinogens, it is thought that mutations will occur and will produce a malignant cell that will copy itself into many cancerous cells. Viruses are the cause of about 15% of all cancers. The virus is able to invade cells and cause them to synthesize new viral particles; viruses carry oncogenes that can 6. In an effort to ensure equal opportunity for all employees it is my recommendation to the Board of Director’s that an affirmative action policy is fully implemented. It will be the duty of the managers to make sure that the mandates that have been put in place are in fact enforced by each and every employee. The establishment of these types of rules will allow for a better workplace for the employees and will also possibly protect the business itself. This essay will provide reasonable evidence as to why the Board of Director’s should consider having affirmative action policies implemented. Affirmative action is aimed at leveling the playing field for minorities to obtain jobs. Despite the past controversy associated with the indecency of the workplace towards minorities, it is crucial that this company understands that the past can in fact repeat itself. It is necessary for companies to implement job requirements of different minorities in order for the company to prevent from having legal issues. There are several companies that seem to have one distinct minority working for their company; however, if someone of a different minority decided that they were interested in working for that same company and get denied a position, that person would have the right to have the company investigated because of possible discrimination. Discrimination is not only a factor of affirmative action, but it also plays a distinct role in the regulations of the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO). Equal Employment Opportunity is the legalized topic that protects individuals within the workforce from people who feel that they are going through situations at their employment based upon being discriminated against. The types of discrimination that individuals in the workplace could possibly go through would include discrimination against their gender, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran status, disability, and even their position within the workplace. Although affirmative action and equal employment opportunity have two different meanings, they both share the same importance. For example, an African American male can go into a company and apply for a position that he is well qualified for, the hiring manager of the company decides that does not feel that the candidate is fit for the position and is turned away. At that moment, if the African American male reasonably feels that he is being discriminated against based upon his race or even his gender then he could possibly have a case against the company. This type of scenario consists of not only affirmative action based upon the minority of the applicant, but it is also relate to equal employment opportunity because he feels that he was turned away based upon his race. Many companies do not realize the consequences that they face when an employee feels that they are being discriminated against or even harassed within the workplace. Not only can it lead to the company having to pay out thousands or even millions of dollars, but it can also damage the credibility of the company to its consumers and clients. It is important that this company as well as many others implement strategies in which they are able to educate their employees about the importance of equal employment opportunity as well as affirmative action. Companies should also post up information in regards to harassment within the workplace or even discrimination so that if an employee is having a problem then the company can try to resolve it themselves before the situation escalates to a more legal issue that is taken to court. This type of implementation will greatly protect the company from lawsuits as well as its credibility. Many companies feel that implementing affirmative action is not crucial to their company because of the fact that their company is diverse and they do not have those types of issues within their workplace whereas people are being discriminated against. Unfortunately, the fact that the company is diverse makes no difference in the types of people that it employs. For example, Wal-Mart is considered to be a very diverse company; however, they are the largest industry facing lawsuits due to discrimination against women employees, African American truck drivers; and numerous of other cases involving discrimination within the workplace. This proves that regardless of the type of company, implementing protection against discrimination in the workplace could possibly be beneficial to companies. In conclusion, I have detailed pertinent information in regards to why this company should consider implementing affirmative action within the workplace. I have addressed the importance of how the company can benefit from the implementation as well as protect its money, credibility, and most of all its employees, from being illegally discriminated against. In Jane Austens a collection of short stories Love and Friendship, she shows us the lives of women in the late eighteenth century, and what they have to deal with. These short stories are written in epistolary (letter) form between women who were friends at the time, these letters show us what their lives were about and what was considered to be important to them. Jane Austen writes about marriage, status, personal views and the attitude to what she saw, she also uses humour in her letters showing us how shallow women were in that time. For young women in the late eighteenth century marriage was very important and a woman who did not get married was considered worthless, all women were expected to get married. There were many important reasons to get married for a woman living in this time, the most important reason being having money. If a woman had no money she would be considered as having a bad status, because women when they were with their parents had no possession of their own. In the three sisters Mary is not sure about marrying Mr Watts she does not like him but she still considers marring him because he has a lot of money. He has a large fortune and will make great settlements on me. I hate him more than anybody else in the world. This shows us the amount of money he has is more important than the relationship and how happy they will be together. She decides to marry him if he will give her all she wants, this shows us how shallow the women could be and what they will do for possessions, she demands a new carriage hung as high as the Duttons, and blue spotted with silver; and I shall expect a new saddle horse, a suit of fine lace, and an infinite number of the most fine jewelsmust always let me do just as I please and make a very good husband. This shows us all the things she expects to get in marring him they are all but one material goods. This shows us that women in the eighteenth century were very much focused on marriage and how much money they could get out of it. If a woman did not get married she would either have to live with her mother or a paid female companion. Another alternative was to be a governess to a wealthy family; this was not a good thing to be because you would be treated a little better than a servant, they would neither be on the same level as the servants or the family. Young women in the late eighteenth century were considered well educated if they had plenty of accomplishment, these were things like sewing, singing, reading and entertaining their guests at a dinner party. In Lesley Castle, Margaret Lesley was writing to Charlotte Lutterell tell her what they did to pass the time in Scotland and what they do is we read, we work, we walk and when fatigued with these employments we relieve our spirits, either by a lively song, a graceful dance or by some smart bon-mot and witty repartee. This shows us that they did not do any challenging or intelligent type of work. The women in the late 18th century were also polite this shows us that this mattered in this time; we can see they are polite because they write long pleasant letters to each other. Lesley Castle demonstrates that it is important to have accomplishments in this time and it allowed them to get into a good marriage which was the most important thing in a young ladys life in the late eighteenth century. Not many girls of the time attended school but the few that did attended boarding school, would not learn to be clever they would only learn things like sewing and singing. Margaret Lesley and Charlotte Lutterell both went to boarding school together, it is four years since my removal from school. School was mostly for boys, some girls went to boarding school but the education was not very good because they did not need lessons and the teachers did not know what to teach them. Women in the late eighteenth century did not own anything or have any property for themselves. A womans inheritance would be given to a distant male relative the woman would never be given the whole of the money. The only way women could get money was through marriage, Mary only wants to marry Mr Watts because he has a large fortune and will make great settlements on me. She also expects the pinmoney; two hundred a year. Which Mr Watts only want to be a hundred and seventy-five. When Mary agrees to marry Mr Watts she expects him to build her an elegant greenhouse and stock it with plants a room on purpose and a theatre to act plays in. she also expects to be allow out of the house all the time she insists on spending every Winter in Bath, every Spring in town, every summer in taking some Tour, and every Autumn at a watering place. Marys mother is set on not letting such an opportunity escape of settling one of my daughters so advantageously. This shows us that money was not only important to the woman but also important to the rest of their family, to ensure that the family would stay with money. It would also be in a mans interest to marry someone with lots of money because some of the family money would be given to him for marring into the family. Marriage was based on material goods not on a relationship. If you did not marry you would have no money and possessions you could have from your father. In Lesley castle Charlotte Lutterell is worried what will happen if by this second marriage sir George should have a second family, our fortunes must be considerably diminished those jewels which once adorned our mother Matilda would no longer sit at the head of her fathers table. This shows us how easy it is to loose money and financial security. Female friendship in the late 18th century come over as shallow, because they are always judging each other Margaret Lesley calls her mother-in-law an insignificant dwarf. Where their mother-in-law Susan Lesley calls Margaret and Matilda scotch giants and continues I am sure they would frighten you out of your wits. This show us that women in the 18th century judge each other and think they look better than each other. There is also a lot of rivalry between friends Mary in The Three Sisters, says how I will triumph over the Duttons and the two families were friends; this shows us that was even rivalry between friends and even though they were nice to them to their faces they were horrible behind peoples backs. Manners and etiquette were more important than actual friendship; Susan Lesley and Charlotte Lutterell are only friends even though they are feed up with each other because she is too polite and I am too civil to say they still write letters which are still as frequent and as affectionate. This show us that women in the late eighteenth century are very selfish, and their lives were very shallow. We have learnt from reading Jane Austens short stories that women in the late eighteenth century had very little choice to what they could do because they had to marry to ensure that they would still have enough money to live. Life in the late eighteenth century for women was very much everyone out for themselves and they all had to fight over having a rich man and material goods better than everyone elses. Jane Austen did not like living in this time we can tell this because of the humour she uses with the women to show how important money was to them in The Three Sister Mary is very indecisive whether she should marry Mr Watts or not. Today we find it hard to compare with how they lived in the late eighteenth century because it is so different to how we live now. I am glad that we live in a society today which is more accepting to women and how both male and female should be treated the same. I also believe that Jane Austen would prefer to live in the society that we live in today because Jane Austen always humours the women in her collection of short stories.
